There’s no shortage of stories about how we are living in historic times and what lessons we can learn from outbreaks and pandemics of the past. We have become used to new definitions of normal and are seeing the knock-on effects lockdowns, quarantines and restricted access can have on everything from local businesses to the world economy.

Changes have taken place in nearly every aspect of our lives — from how we work and collaborate professionally to how we check-in with relatives and socialize with friends. Even news stories have shifted focus, with reports on the specifics of the Coronavirus or tips from the CDC and the resulting legislation taking center stage.

While the world is distracted, there are those taking advantage of our collective diverted attention. Serial killers are especially adept at making the most of any given opportunity. The idea of a serial killer hunting for victims as the world grapples with a wide reaching pandemic may sound like something out of a novel, but it wouldn’t be the first time.

These three serial killers all operated and were active during the epidemics and pandemics of their time. While their neighbors were shuttering their homes, covering their faces, and trying to avoid a silent and invisible killer, these men and women were on the hunt.
