The recent release of Gypsy Rose Blanchard from prison has sparked a new conversation regarding how people (especially children) who suffer through long term abuse retaliate against the person inflicting that abuse. Gypsy’s case has captured attention on a national level not only because of the crime committed, but also because of the abuse leading up to it. There is no debate about Gypsy’s status as a victim, but recently internet personalities have begun to cast a more critical eye on her decision to kill her abusive mother instead of reaching out to various authorities.

Gypsy’s case stands out as one of the only well known cases of medical child abuse that ended in murder, but her story is not unique. Long before Gypsy was even born there were children who resorted to the unthinkable in order to finally reclaim their life from their abusers.
