I remember asking my grandma if she thought Scott Peterson might be innocent. “Why are you asking stupid questions,” she laughed, “What’s wrong with you?”

That’s pretty much the response you’ll get from anyone who has followed the Peterson case. Scott Peterson is, hands down, one of the most despised public figures when it comes to true crime. Crowds of people cheered when the verdict was read and members of Peterson’s family were harassed by crowds as they left the courthouse.

The novel Gone Girl is widely accepted as the fictional adaptation of the Peterson murder. Right from the start, the main narrator and suspected wife killer Nick describes himself as most people would describe Scott Peterson.

I have a face you want to punch: I’m a working-class Irish kid trapped in the body of a total trust-fund douchebag. I smile a lot to make up for my face, but this only sometimes works.

Some fans went on to argue that quote went on to become the catalyst for casting Ben Affleck to play the part of Nick in the movie adaptation of Gone Girl. It also didn’t hurt that he looks a hell of a lot like Scott.
